8 Ways Freelancers Can Use Social Media for Business

Freelancers: How are you using social media in your freelance business? Personally, I used LinkedIn to build professional connections with clients and other freelancers. I also have a Facebook Page for Fleurish Freelance to share insights and wisdom with freelancers, as well as to promote my courses and blog content.

But enough about me – I wanted to know how other freelancers are using social media, where they’re using it, and the role social media plays in their businesses. Here are eight things they shared with me:

Share Organic Content

Creating and publishing content online builds trust and credibility. It helps you become known as an expert in your field. As a B2B business, I rely on LinkedIn, YouTube, and Twitter for showcasing my expertise and helping with SEO. Facebook is a secondary network. The key is to post regularly and use relevant hashtags. On LinkedIn, users can follow hashtags, and there is no limit as to how many you can use in a post. I also repurpose blog articles from my website on LinkedIn with a link at the bottom to the original post on my site. That tells Google that my site has authority on the topic. I use Dlvr.it to automatically post relevant content from trusted industry sources to my social networks. That also helps with getting known as an expert on the topic.

Find Prospective Clients

I use social media mostly to find prospective clients and send them specific proposals in accordance with their business needs. What I have seen is that LinkedIn works very well for this, as you are able to build strong relationships with various businesses and individuals. What is also interesting is that social media generally gives you a much quicker response as opposed to using something like email outreach.

Use TikTok to Create Engaging, Fun, and Creative Content

Using TikTok to create engaging, fun, and creative content to drive traffic to our business was the best decision we made this past year. With no money invested, we have grown our following considerably, increased our brand awareness, and increased sales year to date. Although we have had success across all of our social media channels, our increased traffic on Tiktok has outperformed competitors by a considerable margin.

Use Twitter to 'Warm' My Audience for Conversions

Aside from my side projects, I'm a freelance SEO consultant and regularly run training programmes, alongside selling eBooks. I've found that Twitter has been incredible in the freelance space. It allows us to hone in on a particular audience. We can also use tools such as LinkTree in your bio. This allows us to provide value to, and then upsell, our audience all on one platform. I think Twitter is massively underrated for B2B marketing in particular, as it's a little more informal than LinkedIn with a very active audience who are hungry for knowledge (which you can upsell via an eBook or a course).

Network with Other Professionals

The best way I use social media is by networking with other professionals in my field. Networking with other people helps boost your business's visibility and brand online. I get involved in online discussions, share work, and connect with other freelancers to get the word out about our business. Freelancers should consider using social media to drive traffic to their website or blog so potential clients can learn more about their work.

Engage Prospective Consumers

Engage prospective consumers with your expert knowledge and open fruitful conversations. For example, if you are running a successful freelance business, you should be aware of the incredible reach of social media. Use tools like Twitter or Facebook to start conversations or groups by presenting yourself as a specialist within these groups and creating a following. Have an easy-to-view portfolio available and a fun elevator pitch ready to go.

Share Your Portfolio or Digital Content

A portfolio or visual content is one significant way to use social media to showcase your skills to prospective clients. Social media sites like Instagram or TikTok are great for personal branding and displaying work. Your presence on social media also develops your freelance business and gives individuals another way to connect with you or ask questions about your work. In addition, most successful freelancers attach their business websites to create more impact. A stunning page with great visuals is the best marketing plan to help you land top-notch clients.

Market Directly to Clients

The biggest benefit of social media for freelancers is that it gives us an avenue to market our services directly to clients. The more these relationships grow, the more likely it is that they will hire us. We can share our work samples on Facebook and Twitter, which allows potential customers to see how we operate and what we do best. It also gives them an opportunity to ask questions about our business or get advice on how they should market their business themselves. Also, connect with other writers and editors through groups on Facebook or LinkedIn; these groups can provide valuable networking opportunities and information about current trends in your industry. Host an event on Facebook or Twitter; these events can introduce your brand to a new audience while also boosting engagement from existing fans or followers.
